TDX EGIS II Explosives Detector

The Egis II uses high-speed gas chromatography to detect trace amounts of volatile compounds in the air or collected from physical artifacts like . While the technology is complex, the product itself is quite simple. (You’ve seen this type of thing in use at airports around the world.) A wand is used to collect either a tactile or air collection sample on a disposable pad. The pad is inserted into the detector (top center) and an automated test begins. A small heater fan “releases” particles trapped on the sample-pad and passes them through a laser/prism that reveals the color wavelengths of the elements and compounds. Every compound has a unique spectral signature and target materials such as Nitro Glycerin can be easily identified.

FCI Burndy 12 Ton Tool

High voltage power lines are assembled by connecting large steel cables “end to end” with large metal sleeves that are crimped onto the end of one cable and the beginning of the next. This giant crimp tool closes it’s jaw with 24,000 lbs of force. But that’s not what’s amazing. There’s no easy to access circuit breaker for high voltage power lines. So the line workers work on them “live”. This tool not only needs to be weight balanced over the grip for easy manipulation, there are two triggers (one for closing the jaw and one for opening it), it needed to be usable while wearing a pair of 40,000 Volt insulated rubber gloves.

Burndy 6 Ton Tool

Like its 12 ton “big brother” the 6 ton crimp tool is designed to connect utility power cables. For this project I helped develop a unique single trigger design that rocks in one direction to close the jaw and the opposite direction to open it. As with the larger tool, this product is designed to be held and operated while wearing high voltage insulating gloves.
