The Portable Organ Preservation System (POPS) is essentially a complete ICU on wheels. And this furnished the design team with the challenge of assembling all of the necessary life support equipment in an efficient volume that can easily be transported over long distances and reliably be transitioned between helicopters, SUV’s and operating theaters.
Construction
In order to contain and protect a comprehensive list of life support systems, equipment batteries and vital fluids without adding unnecessary weight, the design team envisioned and implemented a carbon fiber rollcage and panel construction. Technically ambitious product designs are often tempered by the relative complexity and high cost associated with building these “extreme designs”. However, when extreme functional performance including extremely low weight and relatively low “boutique” volumes is acceptable then designs can take on some extraordinary forms.
